Preface
Letter from the Founder
Dear Doctoral Scholar,
Welcome to Dissertation Collegium.
You have likely found your way to this site because you are seeking serious support in completing your doctorate. If so, you may already know the peculiar disappointment of the dissertation phase. One expects that, having completed coursework and entered candidacy, doctoral study will become more intellectually serious, more independent, and more substantive.
Yet for many candidates the opposite occurs. The lively exchange of the classroom disappears, mentorship becomes intermittent, and the dissertation process is reduced to templates, endless revisions, and institutional compliance. The result is a strange contradiction: one is asked to produce a doctoral study whilst being formed, increasingly, by a system more concerned with process than scholarship.
Dissertation Collegium was established as a corrective to this condition. Our mission is simple: to provide a high-touch scholarly environment for doctoral candidates who seek to produce serious scholarship while navigating the constraints established by their programmes. The immediate goal of our labours is the successful completion and defence of the dissertation. The longer-term goal, however, is scholarly formation and the cultivation of a genuine community of scholars, something too often absent from contemporary doctoral programmes.
If this mission resonates with you, I invite you to explore the chapters that follow, attend one of our public Doctoral Colloquium sessions, and, if the Collegium appears suited to your aims, arrange an Office Hour to discuss membership. Each of these serves as a proper orientation to the programme and to the intellectual community it is designed to sustain.
Yours academically,
Ryan J. S. Kotowski, PhD
